St Alphage development
An
application for the redevelopment of the St Alphage site has been
submitted.*
The BA has sent a formal response to
the planning application. Full details (including a copy of the
response) are available on
http://docs.barbicanstalphage.com/
Briefly, the BA has
objected to this development because:
-
It is a large development on a small site and will overlook and wall
in the Barbican
-
In particular the two buildings extend over the building line and
the pavement on their north sides, over Fore Street and over St
Alphage Gardens
-
They will reduce the daylight and sunlight to several flats
-
The amount of open space is much reduced and much of what there will
be will be under cover of the buildings
-
Deliveries and vehicle access to the buildings will be in Fore
Street and Wood Street and are likely to affect residents with noise
and traffic.
Since
the BA submitted these objections the developers have proposed to move
back part of the east building so that it does not overhang the
pavement, but it is only a small part of the building. They have also
agreed to enforce a left turn for vehicles leaving the east building on
Fore Street to reduce the amount of traffic passing by Andrewes and the
Postern.
The BA will submit a
formal response to these changes and also plans another newsletter for
residents this weekend. Because of the changes the formal consultation
period for comments on the planning application has been extended to 5
May, but we are seeking a further extension because of the bank
holidays.

Cinemas – planning permission application
The Barbican
Association’s cinema group (Bruce Badger (Ben Jonson), Paul Bowers
Isaacson (Breton), Janet Haber (Cromwell), Christian Keesing (Cromwell),
Randall Anderson (BA, RCC), Robert Barker (BA), Jane Smith (BA)) have
decided on the following approach. There are three planning
applications for listed building consent, for planning permission, and
for change of use (from exhibition hall to cinemas, café, and
restaurant). The Association has now put in its objections
to the cinemas planning applications in three separate letters to the
three separate applications –
General issues,
Hours of use,
Facade and listing.
